It was believed that Merlinus Ambrosius was the son of a Welsh princess and an Incubus. It was also said that his mother was a welsh princess and his father, Ambrosius, was a Roman Consul. That's even if the Merlin you are talking about ever existed. The most possibly real Merlin is based of a crazed prophet named Lailoken that lived in the woods of Scotland.
Merlinus Ambrosius was certainly not a consul. Seeing as how they had to be a citizen from a patrician family. The Welsh were neither citizens of the empire OR patricians. Plus there is no proof of his existence.
No. It was said that his FATHER Ambrosius was a consul. Merlinus was not a consul. And about the title consul it was thrown around after the fall of the Roman Empire to any Germanic king that would either defend the Byzantine Empire of would give the Pope military support. I agree with you that Merlin did not exist. There are people that Merlin is based off of but the actual "Merlin" from literary works is not real.
I wa reading about gypsy folelore and found this story that some hungarian gypsies believe,"maby thousand years ago there were as yet in the world very few pchuvushi(Earth spirits,i think they are like faries),these are beings of human form dwelling under the earth,there they have cities,but they very often come to the world above,they are ugly,and their men are covered with hair,they carry off mortal girls for wives,their life is hidden in the egg of a black hen" i think the hungarian gypsies believed that they where decended from these spirits(i'm not being raceist,the book i was reading says they believe they are decended from them).
Sorry,THIS is supposed to be the story of their origin,"Once a youg pchuvush women came up to the world and sat in a dair green forest,she saw a very beautiful youth sleeping in the shade and said:What happiness it must be to have such a husband,mine is so ugly!(this is the way it's told in the book i'm readinabout gypsy folklore)Her husband,who had stolen silently after her,heard this,and reflected'what a good idea it would be to lend my wife to this young man till she shall have borne a family of beautiful childeren! then i could sell them to my rich pchuvus friend' so he said to his wife:'you may live with this youth for ten years if you will pronise to give me either the boys or girls which you may bear to him,she areed to this, then the young man awoke and as the goblin offered him much gold and silver with his wife,he took her and lived with her ten years and every year she bore him a son,then came the pchuvush to get the childeren,but the wife said she had chosen to keep all the sons and was very sorry but she had no girls to give him! so he went away sorrowfully howling,then the ten boys laughed and said to their father,we will call ourselves kukaya'. and so from them came the race(kukaya is the race of gypsies i was reading about i guess).
Now you have to explain away the fact that he was WELSH and most probably not a citizen of the empire, let alone a patrician. Therefore he would be barred from holding almost every public office especially that of consul. The story doesn't add up so he shouldn't be cited as an example.
