Question: My Parents Don't Want Me To Be Wiccan -- Can't I Just Lie?

My parents don't think I should study Wicca because our family is Christian. I'm thinking about just telling them I'm not studying Wicca, but doing it anyway and just not telling them, or maybe telling them I'm still Christian. I have a place I can hide some books, and I can probably find someone to teach me in secret. This should be ok, right?

Answer:

No, no, a thousand times NO.

If youre underage, then whether you like it or not your parents are responsible for you, and ultimately get to make decisions for you. If youve decided to convert to Wicca or Paganism, you need to have a serious heart-to-heart conversation with your parents. They either (a) wont know what youre talking about (b) are going to be really opposed to it because of their own religious doctrine, or (c) are willing to let you explore your own paths as long as you do so in an informed and intelligent manner.

If mom and dad have no idea what Wicca or Paganism is, it might not be a bad idea to educate them. To do that, youll need to figure out first what it is you actually believe because if you dont know, how can you share it other people? Make a list of the things you believe in, so you can share it with them. This may include your thoughts on reincarnation, sin, your personal interpretation of the Harm None guideline or the Rule of Three, or ideas on how Wicca or Paganism can empower you and make you grow as a human being. If you can sit down and have a mature and rational discussion with them and that means no throwing stuff and shouting YOU JUST DONT UNDERSTAND!! then you may have a better chance of convincing them that its okay.

Remember, they are concerned for your safety, and so its important that you answer their questions truthfully. Theres a great book called "When Someone You Love Is Wiccan", which I would recommend sharing with your parents or other family members who might have questions.

In some cases, parents may strongly object to their childs practicing Wicca or Paganism. This is usually because of the teachings of their religious beliefs and as parents, that is their right. They are entitled to tell their child that he or she is not allowed to practice Wicca, belong to a coven, or even own books about the subject. If this is the case in your family, there are a number of things you can do.

First of all, dont lie. No spiritual path can get off to a good start if it begins with deception. Secondly, you can learn and study non-Wiccan subjects while you live in your parents home. Mythology, history, herb and plant lore, astronomy, even the religion your parents follow all of these are things that will come in handy later on. Save your Pagan books for when youre an adult and have moved into your own home. Wicca will still be there after you turn eighteen, so as long as youre living under mom and dads roof, respect their wishes.

Finally, you might be fortunate enough to have parents who will allow you to practice Wicca or a Pagan path with their blessing, as long you make an informed and educated decision. In these cases, you may have parents who are Pagan themselves, or they may understand that spirituality is a very personal choice. Whatever their reasons, be thankful that they care, and share information with them at every opportunity. They will want to know you are safe, so be honest and open with them.

Even if they allow you to become Wiccan or Pagan, your parents may still have rules they expect you to follow, and thats okay too. Perhaps they dont mind you doing magic, but they dont want you burning candles in your room. Thats fine find an acceptable substitute for candles. Maybe theyre okay with you learning about Wicca, but theyre concerned about you joining a coven while youre still underage. Thats a legitimate worry. No sneaking out to meet with the local coven! Find ways to study and learn on your own, and when youre an adult you can find a group then. Another option might be to form a study group of some sort with other people your own age, if your parents dont object.

Remember, the key here is honesty and integrity. You may not like your parents rules, but you do have to follow them. Lying will get you nowhere, and will present Wicca and Paganism in a negative light. Remember its their job as parents to be worried about you. Its your job as the child to be respectful and honest with them.

The first thing to ask yourself is whether you are really serious about your beliefs and your practice of Wicca. If you are, what would you do if your parents ordered you to stop that practice immediately? They might you know, and while you are living under their roof you would owe them the respect to abide by their wishes. Why exactly do you need to tell them? Will anyone be hurt by keeping your spiritual beliefs to yourself at least for the time being? Might someone be hurt if you tell them?

From your profile it appears that you are a Christian who happens to practice magic. That does not make you a Wiccan. To be Wiccan you would also need to be practicing the religion of Wicca and worshiping the God and Goddess as well as doing your magic. In my opinion there is no way to be both Christian and Wiccan.

Now, on the other hand, it is perfectly possible to practice witchcraft and be a Christian (except the church will tell you otherwise). Witchcraft spelled with a small "w" is simply a form of magical practice, not a religion. Anyone can practice witchcraft no matter whether they follow a particular religion or not.

Perhaps the first thing you need to do is to figure out exactly what it is you are practicing and what you believe. If you're a Christian you don't need to be telling your parents about Wicca...you need to be explaining magic to them.

Yes.Lie.Hide the truth.Sometimes these can come for good, when people are stupid enough not accepting paganism which IS the correct viewpoint on which we must see the universe.

If you are a minor I suggest you not lie. If you are over 18 you can make your own choices. I believe you should respect your parents, especially if you are living in their house and they are paying your bills. Lying will get you no where as you are likely to be caught and that will only add more negative connotations to the Craft.

Take some time and learn about gardening, meditation, read myths and folklore, learn about the natural world around you animals, birds, plants, rocks, etc. There is much you can learn outside the Path that will benefit you greatly when you are an adult and free to study as you choose.

Just straight up tell them or better yet:
Why do they even need to know? Its not like they are involved in it at all so it doesn't really matter to them

My family (Mainly my two of my aunts) are huge power Christians and they could name every priest and nun in town but to them I'm not Christian nor anything because it doesn't matter to them as I can find no reason to discuss this with any of my family

wait for the right moment to tell them. i think they'll be alright with you being wiccan if you wait for the right time and explain it calmly and clearly to them.

if however you feel they would not understand and it will be far worse telling them, i'd say stop practicing for a bit. it's stated if wicca is the path for you, you will always return to it. while a few years may seem like a long time, in the grand scheme of things, it's not.

Do you still believe in the christian faith? While having the lingering truth of the wiccan and magickal knowledge acknowledged to you? Then why not simply be both, a harmony than just being stuck in-between two religious worlds when they are both obviously connected. Being a Christian Wiccan can help in easing others in your family to agree with you, unless they're too ignorant like my family had been, and tried to shun me away from the knowledge of magick thinking it was evil, plus, being a christian wiccan can help yourself from curiosity as ever I also was. But its only an option, if you hadn't want to become a pagan instead heh.
