there are 2 things i know about 3am one is that is when our brain waves are at their most creative and two it is the time there is no prayer coming from the catholic church
so if there is timekeeping going on its not spirits that are keeping time it is us

You might take a look at the Chinese Healing Wheel. According to that tradition, each part of our body heals at different times. When an organ is under stress, lungs in your case, you will often wake up during the time that that organ is attempting to heal.

Most people don't need a lot of sleep depending on what time you fell asleep is counted on how rested you body is, and all of most the brain cells control when its time to wake.
