You can try valerian for anxiety. It's used for sleep in higher doses so take the lowest dose first at night to make sure it doesn't make you drowsy and ruin your day, and increase dose a tiny bit if you don't find the effect you want. If you exceed 300 milligrams it becomes a sedative. If you want to use it as a sedative, 300-600 milligrams is the dose taken 1 hr before bed. It doesn't effect dreams or prevent you from waking up in the middle of the night (like some sleep aids).

It effects the same receptors as xanax without side effects or dependency. For anxiety 150-300 milligrams or 1/2-1 tsp fluid extract, or 1.5 tsp tincture. Valerian is not easily overdosed, even 20 milligrams is not poisonous, but I would never suggest it. Just because overdose can't kill you doesn't mean it won't make you feel terrible. Don't use it at all if you have a heart problem. And don't take it with other sedatives, narcotics (some pain killers are narcotics) or pentobarbital.

When picking out a valerian product, you need to look at its valerenic acid percentage. That is the stuff in valerian that makes it effective. When researched they used 0.8% in water soluble extracts.

The worst side effect is possible stomach upset or headache in high doses.

It is warming so it calms by increasing vascular circulation which relaxes your nervous system, therefore relaxes your muscles.

All of my info is based off of scientific studies and research from universities (predominantly British) and many many books I've cross referenced for accuracy. I created my own herbal medicine binder that I've used to collect information for years. I don't stop researching an herb until the information just repeats itself and I can't find anything new. If I come across a new study, I add the information if the source is superb.

You're welcome. Make sure to buy a good known brand. Quality counts.

Anxiety and depression have been discovered to have close ties. Many people who have one, have or develop the other. This is actually a recent discovery. But the anxiety here comes first therefore is the key factor. The depression is the reaction our body has after an upset. When we can't stop focusing on that upset (due to anxiety) we keep triggering depression. In my honest opinion, this "new discovery" is not knew at all. People have known this for years, someone just finally did a study on it.

Valerian can be used for both anxiety and depression.
