As far as "proof" goes, I wouldn't try to catch one! They're very smart! And mischievous, too!! Upset one and they could bring bad luck to you! I absolutely believe that they exist. I always have. :)
Look up "Fairy faith in Celtic countries" it is one of the capital works on Fae and Fae lore, and it's in public domain, available on Sacred texts ( I think, could be Google book ) , the text is highly informative and reliable.
Yes they do exist but like Nidawi said they have different personalities and different forms. Generally it is only the flower faeries that look anything like the faeries portrayed in movies( you know female, insect wings, miniature etc)
Sylphs look a little like the faeries you see in films here are the 4 elementals:
Sylphs= air elementals
Undines= water elementals
Gnomes= earth elementals
Salamanders= fire elementals
The fae (fairies) have been around longer then us humans, according to some beliefs. The Celts knew them as the "Tuatha De Dannon" . They were believed to be the children of a goddess Danu. They ruled Ireland from the 1890's-1700 B.C. During some war they were forced out of their control over Ireland and became known as the fae, fair-folk or sidhe. Many people native to ireland will still leave out food or milk for them as offerings, and ask for permission before building a home or doing anything else that may disturb their habitats. Some people can see them here on this plane and others only claim them to be on the astral realm.
I've never thought much of fairy's but I was told by a psychic that I had fairies all around me and that they would move things around and stuff like that.
Did you seriously just say that on a magic site grg?
For one, all religion is belief based and cannot be proven. The occult is the study of the paranormal (myths, legends, things that go bump in the night, "magic" etc.). How can you even be on a site such as this and say you will not believe anything until science proves it?? XD
