I am going to just explain some thinks about the knowledge ranking or reputation system, so that people can calm down and get a a grip on things....

A) The system is still fairly new, therefore it's not perfect and results may not be accurate, meaning the rank in which you currently have may not reflect your actual rank.

B)

1. Only members with the rank "knowledgeable" and above may rank other people.

2. If your ranked as fluffy and you don't know why, then that's probably the reason itself. People usually get ranked "fluffy" because they like to spam, break the rules, role play, and/or is ignorant or arrogant not listening to reason or login from more experienced users on the site.

3. Many people claim the system is unfair or biased, well guess what, unfortunately ... It Is.... one of most important lessons in life is that it is hardly ever fair and to your advantage. It is cruel and challenging and people must work hard to be successful and get far. So my advice is either work harder to change what you don't like or don't let it bother you. If you are ranked below what you believe you should have, and you know that you are so and so, don't let a title or rank stand in your way. You just worry about what matters more, and things will work their way out.

4. If you have a rank that says "None" that means no one has ranked your knowledge level, in order for people to vote for you, you have to participate in chat, and make forum posts. Usually you have to be beneficial and helpful contributing to the topic. There more helpful and knowledgeable you are, the more inclined and inspired members are to vote for you. So instead of complaining about it, get out there and help out, get noticed, and read, study, and write/chat.

I do understand but this reputation can be offensive to magical practitioners who are misjudged

Actually, the fluffy ranking can't be viewed by anyone who isn't knowledgeable or adept on the site. Unranked doesn't show where people view you at, so it's on the same level as a fluffy ranking, or if you don't see any ranking on your profile that is one way to view it.

Either no one has bothered to click on your profile and rank you, or you are ranked as fluffy and no one wants you to know so you don't throw a fit or go running around asking to be re-ranked by knowledgeable and adept members of the site.

Interestingly enough, many of the old member profiles that are of members no longer on this site or no longer officially known on this site or no longer active on this site, members which are knowledgeable, are ranked as beginners or novices.

Examples:

  • http://www.spellsofmagic.com/profile.html?profile=23911
  • http://www.spellsofmagic.com/profile.html?profile=29260
  • http://www.spellsofmagic.com/profile.html?profile=121938
  • http://www.spellsofmagic.com/profile.html?profile=65067
  • http://www.spellsofmagic.com/profile.html?profile=33396

The first two listed names are gagged names, gagged long before this system ever came into place. The third is a former mod which hasn't been as active as she used to be since before the ranking system. The fourth I don't know why they went inactive, but they went inactive since around the time of the ranking. The fifth hasn't logged in since 2009, they shouldn't be ranked at all. Fane, the sixth, hasn't been on since 2010. I think those are enough examples for now. If you need more, I'm sure I can find some.

Other than those glitches in the system, intentional or otherwise and probably not in the original intentions of the site owner nor in the intentions of all of the knowledgeable and adept types, the system is based on popularity more than knowledge.

It seems like your reputation on this site has more to do with the knowledge system than your knowledge does. Your reputation on this site sticks with you, because most of the people still hanging around have always been hanging around, and always will be. Or at least that's what I see.

Newer members may not have a reputation per-say, because they are too new here for anyone to remember who they were, and therefore determine who they are, then make the ranking as they see fit.

For example, if people knew that Terra was so-and-so, then they would rank him as a "Beginner" due to a) his previous behavior, b) how they feel about that previous behavior, and c) because Terra can't see "Fluffy" next to his name (nor can any members who would be willing to tell Terra that he is a fluffy).

Just an example of another glitch in the system.

Another would be members with multiple names on the site. For instance, I am currently ranked as a "Novice" on this account. If I made another account, and acted like I do normally, I would probably be ranked as a "Beginner" simple because you start out as such. If I didn't use this name very often it could always be labeled as such. If I made another new name, and stayed mostly out of public chat and forums, I could remain unlisted for a long time, simply because no one would know whether or not I know anything. I could make one more and say I was someone who isn't well-liked on this site due to behavior. If I acted like them, then some people would probably list me as "Beginner" for the same reasons that Terra was in my example.

So, now I have 4 names in total, with 4 different reasons for a ranking, and 3 different rankings, possibly four if in the last example I was instead ranked as "Fluffy" which I can't see.

It's a bit glitchy when the knowledge of the member never really changes.

Those are just a few things to think about if you bother to read it all.

once again this just feeds the ego and everyone's longing for external value.

its not fair at all a person could be on the site and just join even though he has practiced for over 50 yrs and get a beginer reputation ive been doing magic for a year and two omunths and i dont have one on my prof.

oh quit your whining, if the person did have 50 year experience, he or she would know better than to whine about it. its not that hard to move up in reputation. just be active, actually help with a few posts. actually talk in the live chat. 99 percent of the time there's usual someone in there. I believe the whole system was initiated to get more activity going on in the site. i went from beginner to novice in 2 days. so seriously take a big girl pill and do something about it. other than whining.

I have a complaint i would like to add, why is it that my reputation was a novice and now says beginner. I have experience with magick and occult. So i hate this reputation system.
