One of my teachers/mentors says empathy is just an excuse for poor sensory skill development.

Basically in a nutshell, if you can't physically describe a phenomena in terms of sight, sound, color, odor, taste, or touch, how can you be sure it isn't the working of your mind?

Our mind is of no aid to our sensory body, and our sensory body is what is connected directly to Nature/Source/Spirit/etc. That is why people meditate: to cultivate the Observer that is NOT the mind, to have the constant shenanigans of the mind step aside for a few minutes, and to let Source stream in.

And Zeb, the point is that those who see it as a gift will cultivate their power to help people and heal them overall, not sit back and cower at something they could be learning how to protect against....

I am an empath. I have always had it. I never "developed" it nor do I whine about it. I don't agree that it is some "ultimate" six sense. I feel that all spiritual senses are natural. Some are more aware of them than others, some seek them out and some begin to become aware of them more as they become more spiritually attuned through magickal practice. It provokes both internal and physical sensation.

By becoming more aware of our surroundings (through calming our minds--some use meditation to do this) we can amplify our ability to experience our five senses. Through this same process our spiritual senses can be heightened too. There is no separation in my mind. They are two parts of the whole that is us.

It is nothing "special" to me. It is just as much of a "gift" as my physical senses. I utilize it in my practise and my daily life. I also have learned to control it where it does not effect my life in a negative way. I actually find it very helpful and I've never found it to be inaccurate. My only problem with it is that I tend to connect to people I care for on a deeper level, therefore when I care I am "hurt" more when the individual is suffering emotionally, mentally, or physically or gains negative emotions toward me (such as in an argument). But I've also learned to cut off these people if they begin to use that against me maliciously.

I didn't know what it was for a very long time, until I was twelve actually. I thought that it was perfectly normal. My mother was also empathic, so I grew up seeing it as ordinary.

Scientifically, it has been proven that people have the ability to feel other people's pain. They hooked up sensors to people's brains and had them. witness (I'm not sure if this was on a screen or an actual person) someone in pain. The pain receptors in their brain lit up the identical way they would if they were the ones experiencing the pain. Similar reactions occurred through watching emotions as well. The brain lit up in the spots that would provoke the same emotions. We all know a laugh is "contageous". Some watch sad movies with a box of tissues next to them. Our psychology is of mimicry. We naturally pick up on the emotions and pain of those around us, and clairsentients do so on spiritual level as well. Just as we can physically see and clairvoyantly see, our physiology involving "feeling" both emotionally and physically is merely the physical side of the coin, and clairsentience is the spiritual side of that same coin.

Another interesting fact is that of emotional pain. Science has discovered that the brain makes no separation between the way it responds to emotional or physical pain. This is why many people have described emotional pain as being felt physically. Psychologically we may know the difference but biologically our bodies do not. So in my opinion, when we sense energy, our minds pick it up and process it, and our biology produces the results that we physically feel through emotion and sensation.

It is 100% natural. Just as some people are born with above average sight (above 20/20 vision) or any one of the physical five senses, so too can we have a heightened psychological and/or spiritual empathy.

I would love to hear your comments Zebra and LdyGry. =)
