Comfrey is "controversial" taken orally but many swear by the tea. Just be sure your source is excellent. Most who drink the tea don't drink the roots but the leaves. You're not supposed to take it for a long period of time though, but that is the case with most herbs.

The only reason comfrey (a wonder herb) is considered to cause liver toxicity is because they fed rats heaps of it and then saw that they had liver damage over time. I don't know about you, but I'm not a rat, I don't eat bowels of comfrey or eat it at all, so I really highly doubt the claims.

Another one is Horsetail. I would suggest this one specifically, but it is a diuretic, so again, it cannot be taken everyday for long periods. One week on, one week off is a better recommendation. And be sure to take in extra potassium in your diet as well as drink 8 glasses of water a day. The reason diuretics are not good daily is because they cause our body to lose potassium and can dehydrate if we are not careful. But caffeine is a diuretic as well, so if you're a big coffee drinker, you're already doing something you shouldn't be!

You can also take bathes with horsetail. String a cheesecloth or mesh bag with horsetail over your facet as the hot water comes out.

Glucosamine and Chondroitin sulfate are the only known suppliments to restore cartilage. If you are suffering any bone problems, you should take this in order to prevent nasty future problems, like osteoarthritis.

Western medicine ignores or attempts to discourage herbal remedies because it takes away from their profit, especially that of the pharmacuetical companies. But really when you look at the side effects and damages that can be caused by pharmacuetical drugs, it is a far worse than those of herbs.

They say that Comfrey, known as a miraculous herb for a variety of complaints, causes liver damage, yet approve extra strength tylenol, and some doctors prescribe even stronger tylenols (tylenol 3) which damages your liver even more than alcoholism! The liver is a self repairing organ, the minimal damage (if the claims even hold ground) that you could do with taking comfrey would heal itself, just like it healed the damages you caused last Yule or on your birthday! Lol

And if you already have liver problems, I would recommend milk thistle because it can regenerate liver cells.

DO NOT CONSUME DAIRY PRODUCTS!!! THEY ACTUALLY WEAKEN YOUR BONES!! milk as a high ph level and when it enters your body it acidifies which can become a threat to your kidneys!!! so what happens is your body draws OUT calcium from your bones to neutralize that acid. so your body loses more calcium than actually it has taken in. research shows that more people who had drank tons of milk in there lifetime had oestoprosis. people who drank milk also had more broken bones!!!! get your calium from plant sources please!!!!! if you dont belive me then google it!!!
blessed be!

It's not the comfrey itself, - it's the pyrrolizadine alkaloids it contains, which are subject to question :)

There is such a small amount that they found, you probably have more toxicity in the mouthwash you use on a daily basis. And they have yet to do any sufficient studies to truly "prove" it.

Here is an article from an extremely well educated individual. I'm sure you'll find it very interesting!

My apothecary that is based in my city is one I would suggest for anyone to buy their herbs from. I've been a customer for many years. Smallflower.com
And she carries everything you'd ever need! A good source is really very important when purchasing herbs and roots.

I always have a container of comfrey root on hand because you never know when you may need it! It heals any wounds and burns extremely fast though, and if there is infection and that isn't tended to, it can heal it inside, so if you use it topically, you really need to include a natural antibiotic, I use thyme and raw honey in combination. Drinking the tea along with topical use for serious injury is a wonderful pairing by hitting the injury from the inside and out. And its also great for cold and flu.

The wonderful thing about comfrey is that it heals everything, tendon, muscle, bone and tissue when using topically and internally. Topically it has the ability to still absorb into the skin and heal the bone! Baths in comfrey are great for the skin too. There is so much that comfrey can do, it's sad that people are now being told not to use it. It's happened to many herbs, and it will continue to happen.

Look at aloe vera. It has cured cancer, can combat hepatitis, and is so healing internally and externally that it is also a wonder herb. But it has toxicity! The facts you won't find easily is the fact that in the correct amounts it won't hurt you. Everything is toxic in excess, you can even get water poisoning by drinking more than your body can handle. Too much salt, too much alcohol, too much iron all can kill you. Too much of anything is a bad thing. The key is moderation and be sure that what you are putting into your body is right for you. Always check for "contraindictions", which means the people with certain diseases and health problems should avoid that herb, and what not to mix with that herb (prescriptions).

And if anyone needs help figuring out an alternative herb due to contraindictions that prevent them from taking the one that will help them, feel free to pm me. I don't claim to be a "doctor" but I am well versed in herbal medicine and I can give you my recommendation. Of course if you have any health problems or take medication for mental or physical problems, even over the counter, you should always ask your physician before adding any internal herbal treatment.

The truth is that every medicine, including foods, has a theraputic/toxic window. The fact that toxicity exists is what makes something a medicine. There is recent research into herbs that is uncovering information we didn't know before. There have always been states of alarm about substances, that later calm down. Perhaps this is what is happening in herbal medicine, now it is more in mainstream scientific consciousness :)
