I was also taught that when you cast your spell to act on the intent that your spell has worked and that you already have it..
like many others say if you think negative then you will get the negative effect...

Once you have concentrated on the effect of the spell and letting it go and know you have it, you should then forget the spell for that day and re-do it again if need be..
