second you dont have to do evil things or realy weard things with magic like killing a goat and drinking the blood xD you could explain that its just for good luck or make a plant grow faster things like that
an other thing do it secretly untill you can do a realy cool but harmless thing control fire (not harmless but still good )

At least in this day and age you won't be burned at the stake, tortured or drowned for it like in the middle ages,(in the western world, some cultures would still proberbly do that in this day and age).
