i meditate with each card, research the card, and once i start to learn what it means i move on to the next one. i do readings throughout this time and keep the book handy. this is a good way to remember i feel.
Memorize is not what you are suppose to do with Tarot cards. Tarot cards are suppose to provide you with information. You need to connect yourself to each card to receive their message. The written meanings of the cards are checks to be sure that what you are receiving is in the right neighborhood. Like said before. Meditate with and spend time with each card individually for as long as it takes for you to "know" the card. Patience is not a virtue in magick, it is a requirement if you desire success. Be persistent and remain focused.
You do not need to memorize the tarot card meanings just let the card speak to you. Believe me that is way easier than remembering 78 cards meanings which was an epic fail for me cause I tried and all it leads is to frustration and putting away the cards.
What I recommend you is to get yourself a journal or a 3 ring binder and get to know your cards.
Write a story, find songs that matches the mood to each card, draw a picture, do a card of the day, meditate, play solitaire, do the tarot talk, look at your surroundings and see of it resonate the setting of your cards, sleep with them to see your dreams will pick up, etc.
The thing is to have fun and get to know your new friends. Do not rush yourself just take your time and remember to practice!
Forgot to mention that I do that using my tarot cards that are related to the Rider tarot if you have Thoth tarot then I recommend you to read "Understanding Aleister Crowley's Thoth Tarot" by Lon Milo DuQuette and "The Book of Thoth" by Aleister Crowley to understand the cards better but do not expect to get it right away cause the cards is a lot to take in especially since it has astrology, the tree of life, Hebrew letters, etc. My recommendation for these cards is to study each card individually, learn the history of each card, meditate, read books on the qabbalah and take your time. It will be worth it just do not give up.
Believe me even I'm a newbie when it comes to Thoth tarot so I know how frustrated it can get.
Again practice makes it better and take your time.
