made my first staff

I finally did it. I used birch from a wooded area. Purified my saw by coating it with angelica root infused cooking oil, and using it to take part of a tree. I then cut the wood to the same length of myself, and proceeded to shave the bark off with a cut-throat razor i purified the same as my saw. And sometime after that, i sanded it with 100 grit sand-paper.

P.S. would applying a finish to the staff ruin it?

Congratulations on making your first staff!
I personally wouldn't put a finish on it, but I do not feel that it would ruin your staff to do so.
It is your staff you can make it as you think it would work best :) You can even put feathers, crystals, sea shells, etc on it to add to it.

I think the bare wood, without a finish would be more conductive in your hands, but it is your staff and your personal preferences.
Some Runes burned into the staff would be nice. Maybe name your staff. I have wanted a staff for myself for some time but I have only made wands. I imagine that the rules for making a staff are the same as for making a wand.
Well done, when finished, bless it and consecrate it.

Another option would be to rub the wood with peanut or canola oil. it soaks into the wood and helps protect it from water and sweat, while maintaining the wood's natural color. it might take a few days and five or ten rubbings, but once the wood is treated the maintenance is pretty easy. Just a gentle cleaning of the surface with some water, then another rub-down of oil every couple of months.
