No? No magic doesn't give you any type of illness for practicing it.

Magic may not cause mental illness however I do believe that there are certain types of magics and practices that can effect your mental health. Witchcraft in the broad range of the term, when practiced with suitable knowledge and caution, is not inherently dangerous to its user, however if you expose yourself to some magics, such as trance working or altering your state of consciousness to experience a desired thing, can effect the way you see the world. Magic can and will change the way you perceive the world, and depending on how you take and accept that change in perspective will determine the outcome of whether it will effect your mental health in a negative or positive way.

Too much of anything can become toxic, an obsession, an addiction...

This opens the door to mental health risks.

To avoid this happening practice caution, don't do anything you're not comfortable with, and if you find yourself participating in questionably dangerous activities consider the worth of the activity compared to the risks and consequences. It always helps to have a buddy nearby who is comfortable being around witchcraft, though not everyone is lucky enough to have a friend who cares that much.

I suggest you find a local, family group of practitioners. Join them for a get together and talk to their leader(s) about the possibility of you learning from them some ways to carry on your practice safely.

Mental illnesses are defined by a grouping of symptoms that impede daily life and are things like ADD, Depression, Bipolar Schizophrenia, OCD, and the like. Magic has absolutely nothing to do with mental illness except in cases of mentally ill people practicing magic. Even then, magic cannot change mental illness, let alone cause it.

This is honestly like people saying vaccines cause autism. It's a baseless accusation that ends up harming people because people refuse to research everything involved and buy into fear mongering - which is exactly what your friend is partaking in, knowingly or not.

Your spirituality is entirely up to you, Diana. Other people can offer their opinions, but at the end of the day, only you can control what you believe in.

lol no. it's the same belief some have that mental illness can be cured with a healthy dose of Jesus. mental illness is an imbalance in the brain. [it's like you're friend saying you'll wake up crippled if you're a witch. there's a lot more that goes into it than what path you follow]

personally i have anxiety and depression, but it has nothing to do with my witchcraft and everything to do with past traumas and fears. if anything witchcraft helps me manage it, by being mindful and meditating i can catch negative thought patterns and switch them, when i feel a panic attack coming on i use breathing exercises and grounding to help calm myself [and while there's little science behind it, regular cleansings do make me feel better]
