Now you're going to get people who laugh and say you don't need permission, but I was taught from a young age to ask before taking a leaf, branch or flower. Of course at that age, I was told to "listen" for it to say it was alright. I still sort of "listen" but it's an intuitive understanding not actually waiting for a verbal response.

Really it is just a form of respect. It's like saying "excuse me", "pardon me" etc.

You're approaching the plant as a living being and giving it honor and respect by not just ripping a piece of it off. If you really want to be formal about it, it is also "proper" to leave an offering at the base of the plant as an exchange.

WhiteRav3n is right. I was raised this way and we would simply tell the plant we needed part of it, ask for its help, and thank it for its offering.

Another form of requesting permission is to offer something in return. For example, I was taught to sprinkle some natural tobacco or chopped up peels around the roots of the plant. This acts as a fertilizer and can be both an offer of exchange or an apology for taking.

i generally just ask plants that i wild craft from, the plants i grow i normally just take them because since i grow them i put in my energy to make the live, and grow so i put in my energy everytime i go into the garden and do some gardening. also i feel that if i take some from plants it makes them grow better so that it actually helps the plants. so it just depends on how you feel.
