In honor of Samhain, Halloween, Autumn, and my epic love of horror, I propose we begin a thread full of scary stories; urban legends, ghost stories, real occurrences, and book/movie suggestions. Please cite your sources (at least tell us where you heard it) and I beg of you: if you are going to submit a 'real occurrence' please, please be honest. The truth is stranger than fiction most of the time, and there is no shame in living a life void of paranormal activity.

Have fun with this, and don't blame me for nightmares lol :)

For my input, first I will suggest some books and movies:

1.) Any book by Clive Barker. This guy is a horror genius, I absolutely love his style. There used to be a site online (part of Yahoo I think) where you could read his stuff for free. I'll see if I can get the link and post it here.

2.) The Strangers. A lot of people didn't like this movie, but it gives me the creeps. It scares me because it seems like a very possible situation. The movie is supposedly based on real events, but how loosely based is highly questionable.

3.) Vacancy. Another one of those "it could happen" movies. I liked this one a lot, though again it wasn't received very well by the general public.

4.) "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon", by Stephen King. This is one of his shorter books and I find it quite moving. It is about a girl lost in the woods and some paranormal activity she encounters.

5.) "Everything's Eventual", by Stephen King. This is a collection of short stories, many of them very good.

6.) 1408. This movie is based on a short story by Stephen King (in "Everything's Eventual"). I am really into psychological creepiness, and the constant twists of this movie are great. And Morgan Freeman is in it XD

7.) The Machinist. Christian Bale - 'nuff said. But seriously, it's one of his best movies in my opinion, and it's very odd/sad.

And now for a true story:

A few years ago (I have to say, 3?) I was at my friend Sarah's house. It was a girls' night in: me and Sarah, her little sister and her friend, her mom and her friend. Her mom was having some wine and her little sister was in the kitchen. We were watching TV and decided we'd go upstairs to hangout where it was quieter, so to the stairs we went. At the top of the stairs is Emma's room (Sarah's little sister). As we climbed the stairs I happened to look into the darkness in Emma's room and I saw a hunched figure. An awful chill went up my spine and I whispered to Sarah, "Someone is in there!" We ran around the corner to her room and locked the door.

It definitely could not have been anyone who was over that night; everyone was downstairs as we had seen before we went up. Sarah lives in a very tall house and the only way up to Emma's room from the outside would literally have to be a grappling hook or a very tall ladder. We were panicking, almost crying, but we had to tell someone. I did not believe it was anything paranormal at first, and I was worried that something very bad could happen (Sarah lives out in the woods on the edge of town); I wanted to get the phone and call the police but we decided we should just run downstairs and alert everyone else. We yanked open the door and flew down the stairs. We told her mother something was up and when everyone came to check out the room, no one was there. The window was closed and Emma's clothes were all over the floor. Needless to say, her mother did not believe us and after checking all the rooms we were left to clean the room. I don't think I ever been so upset in my life. Her mother is Pagan and believes deeply in spirits and the unseen, but didn't believe us. We locked ourselves in, just in case, mulling over what I had seen and what it could have been

About a year ago I learned about "shadow people" (entities that show up as shadows in the dark, which some people believe to be a separate entity from ghosts/spirits entirely), and that is what I believe the entity was. Shadow people haven't been known to harm anyone, or even pay much attention to the people who see them, and they are one of my favorite paranormal topics.

More to come :) Share your stuff!

Aw man did you have to go there? I was all into writing a response and then you had to go and try to scare me away.

I find your personal encounters to be of up most important story you wrote. After all you gave an eye witness account and then proceeded to research your topic. Standing O! You are believable and knowledgeable on your topics :)

As for my for my scariest encounters I must put when I was in college my freshman year I lived in a haunted dorm. Being a pagan I did not think that the spirit would bother me so much. I was so wrong. From day one I had things moved around, my stereo going on and off when no one touched it, strange noises form above even though there was no one above you. And my favorite the room temperature drop when I was alone in the room. When I first saw the 6th sense it reminded me of how my room would be. Needless to say it bothered me mostly because I was a strong advisory. All the other girls were easy to scare, I was more of a challenge ;)

Yikes, you had to go and mention haunted dorms! I was just talking to my friend about how I think there may be something in mine. I'll hear footsteps in the room and I KNOW (living on a floor of nightowls) what footsteps in the hall, above my room and under my room, and from adjoining rooms sound like and they are not what I hear. It freaks me out, but I haven't seen or felt anything (yet).

Well I guess I have a fun story. Me and my friend were using a divination board,(Ouija board) and yes I know how to use one and how to protect myself and all such things, I'm not dumb enough to play around without knowing my stuff. But we were talking with this spirit called "A" he didn't tell us his full name, our guess is Anthony, but anyways we were talking to him, and turns out he had been following my friend around (she attracts spirits, sort of like a medium does), we went on from there not really minding because he has still yet to do something. Then we asked if he would tell us how he died, he first told us he couldn't tell us, but then made a shaky yes. All of a sudden both me and my friend started to hear a high pitch tone, that got louder and higher, sounding like a boiler about to explode, it got so loud we had to cover our ears, while this was happening we were hearing grunting noises also. But in one instant it all ended, we checked our shields and we were fine. Soon after "A" left.

Another thing that makes this kind of scary is that we were using a pendulum since we don't have something to slide across the board, and it would raise up almost sideways to float over a letter.... So yeah, there's my scary story

This is awesome! great idea to have spooky stories told in a magick based website!! genius! ok ive had a lot of scary stuff happen to me so i'll start at age two.MY great grandma is a witch and has a very bad repuation because she casted a death spell on her boss but it jumped to the boss's daughter, so anyway I was two years old (i was told by my mom and sister later on) and I started crying and refused to step into her house and my grandmother said a spirit was bothering me, i had dreams of this spirits face later on in my life and when my mom told me this, the image came back up.

A few years back i lived in a very old house and the past owners of that house was said to be a witch (my next door neighbor was a witch also); One day i felt a strong presence, something coming in from my living room, and thats when my sister tried to commit suicide. My mom went to a psychic and the psychic told her that someone sent a spirit/demon to cause us harm and it entered through the living room window, (i was only 8). I was standing near the living room, trying to banish the spirit/demon (I had no knowelegde of spells or anything) the spirit showed up on the other side of the living room it was very disturbingly vivid (i actually thought it was my brother at first, i was dead wrong) i saw this horribly burned figure, kneeling down, it had holes on its skin all over, it looked up at me and smiled and jumped down and it vanished.

In the same house, i was sleeping one night and i had a very weird dream and something whispered in my dream (a name, i cant recall) i had the urge to wake up but something powerful was holding me asleep, in the morning i woke up and my brother told me he saw to demon like figure, one with a black cloak, and one with no skin on, but veins and muscle showing, blood red, laying next to me. Years later i came to an article about boo hags, which matched the describtion of one of the demons.(they come to you while you're asleep and steal life energy, if you struggle to wake up through their sleeping spell they kill you. So i think i was attacked by a boo hag and since i was struggling to wake up it was trying to kill me, and maybe the black cloaked figure was a reaper. Since my brother ran out the room, they probably got scared off.

There's more but yeah thats enough for now =) hope you enoyed, btw, those are true events, not changed or anything for my experince. sorry for the spelling.

In our previous house, I had 4 strange experiences. On the wall behind one of the bedroom doors, there was some writing which, in english, read: 'Aletta did he'. You could only see it if you looked carefuly. The other thing was that I saw this black figure flying through the house from time to time. For those who saw the harry potter movies, the figure looked just like a dementor. But at that time I didn't even know that the harry potter series excists. The third thing was that I was having nightmares every other night about murder, shooting, death and blood (no, I didn't watch war movies at night). The last thing was that some nights there was a dog sitting in my room and wagging its tail which then made a thumping noise on the carpet. I never saw the dog. If these 4 things are related, I would never know.

In the house in which we've lived for the past 6 years, I also had some strange encounters. My bedroom and bathroom are at the far end of the hall opposite each other. One night at about 23:30 I was in my bathroom, the door was about 3 quarters closed. In our house 20:00 is lights out. Anyway, just as I wanted to open the door to head back to my room, I heard loud footsteps on the tiles coming down the hall and it then stopped in front of my bathroom. There I stood, cold as ice. Just on the other side of the door, someone was standing and I expected the door to open any moment. I stood there for about 5 minutes, the sound of my heartbeat was echoing in the bathroom. I finally gathered enough courage and I pulled open the door, there was no one in the hall.

In the past few weeks I was attacked twice in my sleep. There was this force that clutched me and threw me around my room. I can't even begin to describe my fear at that moment, the fear of being attacked and not knowing what it is that is attacking you and why. I have no known enemies that could have sent it. I knew that it was a spirit attacking me. I then started to banish it and a few moments later it was gone. The second attack wasn't so violent as the first. I then did a protection spell and no incidences occurred since.
