Herbs for migraines

Does anyone know of any herbs or home remedies that will help with cronic migraines. I take so many Tylenol my liver will probably give out before I'm 30 and they really don't work all the time!

If you truly have migraines and not just frequent, bad headaches, then you first need to see a doctor about them. There are a number of medications that can help prevent and also to relieve migraines, but they must be prescribed by a physician.

I would not recommend asking for advice about herbal remedies on a board where many of the answers you get will be from those who actually don't know much about herbs, their side-effects, and their interference with other medications you might be taking. Nor do we know about any allergies or other health issues that you have.

If you want to go the herbal route, then I would suggest that you be evaluated by a licensed herbalist, a naturopathic physician, or someone who practices Chinese medicine. They are far more knowledgeable about all of the risks and benefits of herbal treatments.

In the meantime, there are many things which can trigger both migraines, if that is what you have. Food is often one of the triggers. So avoid things such as:

  • Aged cheeses: blue cheese, mozzarella, feta, cheddar, parmesan
  • Alcohol: red wine, beer, whiskey, champagne
  • Caffeine: coffee, chocolate, tea, colas, sodas
  • Pepperoni, hot dogs, luncheon meats
  • Bread and other baked goods
  • Dried fruits
  • Smoked or dried fish
  • Potato chips
  • Pizza, peanuts, chicken livers, and other specific foods
  • Keep a log for yourself of what you had eaten right before one of your migraines and you may begin to see a pattern that indicates that one of the above foods or something else might be one of your triggers. Avoid that and see if your migraines become less frequent.

You caqn see what the Mayo Clinic has to say about migraines and migraine triggers at http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/migraine-headache/basics/causes/con-20026358

Remember too that not every bad headache is a migraine. Many of them are caused by tension in the muscles of the neck and head, the so-called "tension headaches". The treatment for these headaches is very different than the ones for migraines. That's why it is important to have a physician evaluate you to determine exactly which type of headache you're experiencing.

It's about herbs that can alleviate a weaker problem. Wiki is only an example. It is necessary to search multiple sources.
