Can anyone recommend meditation techniques for someone who can't relax? I haven't relaxed in years.

before meditating I usually drink a cup of tea and do something I find relaxing such as reading a good book( if you don't care for reading books you can do something else you find relaxing just avoid things that require a lot of energy and focus). This helps me get in a state where I feel more physically relaxed for meditation and in a way is a meditation itself. When I meditate I like to meditate outside and listen to the sounds of nature. I usually hold one imagine in my mind and focus on it until that is the only thing I am thinking of. If outside I usually imagine a nature scene. as it goes with the ambient sounds. once at that step, I then go on to do whatever I was planning on doing.

My husband loves meditating while taking a hot bath with music playing when he has been exceptionally "stressed" from work and such.

But honestly, you don't have to "relax" to meditate. Meditation is about quieting your mind and either focusing on one single thing or nothing. Repetitive motion provokes meditation, such as knitting, sweeping, and even jogging. Don't you ever noticed how zoned out the speed walkers, joggers, and bikers are on the tracks? They're in a meditative/trance state. You probably meditate once a week if not every day without ever realizing it.

We purposely meditate and create a focus for ourselves to strengthen our minds. Try a mantra like OM. You need to read how to actually do it correctly and how to breathe right. It isn't as simplistic as it seems. The sound is supposed to vibrate through different parts of your body as you say it and you need to breathe with your diaphragm.

The one on my page does have you concentrate on one thing, the body. With each body part you relax more and more, and when finished, your mind is clear. Its easy and effective. Try it. BB
