Spirituality!
By:
All too often I see here on the site posts about gaining power and getting stronger and all those things that make us more then what we are for whatever reasons that we choose or need to do so. What ever happened to the spirituality of the craft and our paths? Whatever happened to communing with the things that made us and seeing what they have to teach us? Have we surpassed the old ways and now rely on ourselves completly without any worries about what the devine energies of the world will do to us. What do you all think? Do you even know how to explore your paths from a spiritual aspect? Do you even care too?

Oh the spirituality is still there. But it is more rare to come by now of days, and I think that is because of the general media programming.

Also, a lot of people look to something like magick at a young age to escape their own reality (and make one of their own). By doing so, they take away the spiritual side and live in their imagination - which is not entirely bad, but not entirely good either. When people realize that magick is a part of their reality, and is a truth for them, they start to see and explore the more spiritual side of their paths.

A while ago, somebody over simplified the general community of those who seek magick and why they do it. They gave 2 reasons:

  • For power
  • For Knowledge

At first I didn't think this was true, as I am generally opposed to over simplifications, but time and time again has this person's theory been proven right by my experience.

Unfortunately, at this point in time, and the evolution of our consciousnes's, we have reached a point where the number of people seeking power outweighs the number seeking knowledge.

It will pass with time. Stay optimistic :)

I think the spiritual aspects of magick are of course tied to ones path. My chosen path, which is really one I forge, has no spiritual aspects as my beliefs aren't compatible with magick but through learning about magick, various paths, etc... I've come to appreciate or take notice of nature more, I feel that the "true" power one can gain is a greater understanding of themselves and the world around them not to mention power without knowledges is useless, I feel that some gain something more important than knowledge or power from this site that being communion with like minded people, etc... I don't believe the spiritual side of things is gone but I think the media portrayal of magick as said above combined with busy schedules, modern conveniences, etc... keeps people from truly taking in the world around them and spiritual aspects of all religions are falling by the wayside not just magickal paths. How can you think about a higher power or take time to communion with it when your mind is cluttered with so many thoughts. Then there are of course those who possese no belief in a higher power and practice magick so they're path is devoid of any spiritual side.

The spirituality is still there, it did nothing more than change forms-reasonable spirituality- scientifically verified ways to live a spiritual life, to gain enlightenment. So yes indeed we've surpassed the ways of Old. Usually the modern divine energies are referred to as the "Universe" or "Universal Energy", times have changed, like the leaves on a tree. But it's so rare-endangered- majority of the population don't care much for spirituality anymore, but I guess we are in that phase of the cycle.

To me spirituality was hard won. i had read about the god and goddess at a young age but had no understanding of it. now my spirituality is as much a part of me as the air i breathe.

One of the things that I find most irratating for lack of a better word (not to cast any thought or opinion in a bad light) is that a lot of us think that we require religion these days to gain spirituality. I grew up in the christian faith and still hold many beliefs from that path but it was not untill I stepped outside the box that I truly began to discover what spirituallity was and is. Nor does it require any belief in some devine higher power or being. If you look at a bee dance to tell its mates where the food is and you gain a greater appreciation for nature then is that not spirituality in its basest form?

I agree and to me that answers many questions. It gives me peace in my everyday struggles! It helps me live my life. And I think the whole world can use a little bit of that when all is said and done.

But for those that do not know what spirituality is and how to look at it what are some good techniques that people have experienced or tried that really have helped you? Ill list one of my own first.

Ive decided to follow the year and a day motief for my practice so far since one of the paths I follow is Wicca. But my teacher has started me with the elements and in a way I have not really seen in many books and practices of today. He believes that to really use an elements energy we should approach them like we would any diety. With honor and respect asking the spirit of that element to teach us what it would have us know. I started with the element of air. I performed a ritual to call forth the spirit of air to commune with me like I would any ward or angel or whatever when casting a circle. I asked the element to teach me what it would have me know. The first lesson it taught me was both physical and spiritual. At this time I started a rough time in my life loseing much of my possessions and also loseing my home. I was very depressed and was about to give up on life completly but I then realized a very important thing. There is more to life then material possession. I made some great friends that have helped me in my struggles. I began to see how nature survived only with what it had. Always recovering in its great cycle of life. So I let go of all the physical losses I faced and began to try to live life like nature does letting the powers that be guide me to my path and destiny. I found a job and have now began to rebuild the things that I have lost and I feel better about them because I aquired these things. I worked for them and I realized that all is never truly lost no matter how deep in the hole I got. The lesson was personal to me and I know that it was taught by a universe that is more vast and experienced then me.

This is a small wxample of spirituality. I would love to hear some other experiences as well.
