Herbal Spells

Post # 1
Merry Meet All,

Regarding herbal magick,

Is there a definite guide, or can anyone in the community please advise me on the quantities used in herbal magick. When I construct sachets of herbs, do I use a pinch of each magickal herb or a designated weight?

Are there books available that gives incantations or spells for herbal magick? I have read a few books and searched the internet but all I have found are the required ingredients and no incantations or spells.

I shall be very grateful for any advice or constructive critism that anyone can provide.

Thank you,

Geas.

This is a bit tricky because it really depends on what you have available and what the spell will call for. A good book that you may want to look into is Scott Cunningham's The complete book of oils, incense and brews. This book gives you recipes and the like for potions, instructions on how to make oils, incense, etc... If you really want to get into herbal magic, Scott Cunningham is the best author on the subject that I've seen up to this point, also checking out books that deal with homeopathy and herbology will be of great help to you too.

I agree with silvervixin.

When constructing herbal crafts you can follow a previously written magical working or you can use it as a guide. I personally like to make my own with the ingredients I have on hand. When I add herbs I use my instincts to know when I have added enough of each herb and if I have enough diversity in my blend.

Some tips for mixing herbs;

When grinding herbs make sure you keep your mind focused on your magical working. The thoughts you have while grinding can effect the outcome.

When you can use your hands to mix and crush the herbs.

When making a sachet for your bath or a pillow wait to crush the herbs until you are about to use it. For a bath crush right before placing in the water. For a pillow crush a bit before each use. This will aid in releasing the essence at the proper time.

When grinding herbs be sure to grind in a clockwise motion for herbs that aid in gaining. Use a counter clockwise motion for herbs that aid in banishing.

Cunnigham's book is good, another book is called " The Master Book of Herbalism" by Paul Beyerl. Over 350 pages on Herbs, and their uses both medically and magically.

I have that book Rilke and honestly, not that impressed with it. It's good for a quick reference though.
