Yes, it's ironic how the 2 religions that oppose each other for their beliefs are so much alike.

But our one difference is that Witches know they have power and utilize it while Catholics think that god has the power to do things. So actually spell casting is more powerful than a prayer becuase we are (I don't really know how to say this) but you get the point.

i think we know what you mean, i think you are right. they are so very closely related. when we go into circle we use powers do get a certain thing to happen, much like a prayer. when we do sabbats and esbats we pretty much do prayer in the circle.

Its not just Wicca, but pretty much all Catholic rites, are "stolen" from Paganism. This is because a long long time ago when the Pagans were killing Christians, the Christians had to hide their rites, so they based all of them from Pagan rites to make it less suspicious, Easter is based from Ostara, and almost all Catholic holidays are based off one of the Sabbats.

I think you may have your theory of why Catholic mass is so similar a little messed up there Daitengo.

They are similar because they were taken from Pagan rites. When Christianity hit, in order to appeal to true Pagans (country dwellers), they wanted the new religion to look attractive to them to make the transition easier. The mass is similar to rituals and the Holidays are pretty much the same because it was essentially an advertising ploy. "Look, it's like your old way but better, come be with us".

How can the two be alike? The Judeo/Christian belief is of one God; all powerful, all knowing, etc. Wicca is all about representing the deity as both male and female. The two religions have many things "in common", but the basic beliefs are as different as chalk from cheese. And yes, early Christians "stole" from Judaism, as did Islam. Most of the "organised" religions have stolen from each other. Even Paganism has many "paths"; Wicca is only one of them. To me the difference between a prayer and a spell, is that a prayer is "asking" for help; a spell is "giving it". Even witches do sometimes "pray" to the Gods!
