Banshees
By:
I would like someone to tell me about them.
What are they? What are their abilities? Are they only good or can there also be bad ones?
Also, do banshees incarnate? Do they have any ties to the moon?
Sorry for posting this on a weird manner...I am just in a hurry while I am writing this.
Thanks in advance.

The Banshee is mainly Irish folklore, but is also in other cultures. Really, the stories of the Banshee arose from the very old practice of hiring a woman to "keen" (Weep and wail) at a funeral. By about the 18th century the story had grown into the belief that the Banshee would howl when somebody was about to die.

Banshee legends existed before the 18th century. The word Banshee is derived from the term Bean Sidhe which loosely means Woman of the Mound (Fae Mound). They have been said to only foretell the death of a few Irish bloodlines. I personally believe the Banshee are a form of Fae associated with the concept of the Celtic fate Goddess who would be mother, maiden, or crone. Banshees have been said to change appearance as if gaining or losing age. Here is some more information.

Yes, the Banshee legend existed before the 18th century. But that was only about a few Irish families. From the early 18th the idea became more widespread.
Bean Si does not mean Fae mound; it means Barrow; burial mound.

Fae mound is a simplification. Some old legends about the ancestors of the Fae, the Tuatha De Danaan, said that they fled to mounds and used them as a gateway between their world and ours. I just didn't feel like cluttering the forum. Didn't take as long to explain as I thought it would.

I know just how difficult it is to explain anything in a few sentences on-line.I have had messages asking me to teach all I know! As though I can write a few words to give over 80 years of learning! It seems that every time I try to explain something, I get arguments;usually from children!
My Irish grandmother would get furious when English people said that Gaelic was spoken in Ireland. It isn't, and it never was. The language of Ireland is Erse. Gaelic is Scottish.
