The original anthropological term was for the spiritual tradition of tribespeople all over the world.

It's a controversial term now because it's disrespectful to lump the spirituality of, like, Aborigines in the Northern territory of Australia with Chippewa Native Americans and Icelandic seidhr-workers just because some lazy anthropologists thought that they were all "primitive" and so all the same and not worth looking deeper into or differentiating.

Generally, though, shamanism is characterized by Animism (philosophy) and working with the otherworld through vision quests (which modern people and practitioners might call astral projection.)
