Any advice on how to make a staff

I made a staff once upon a time. A beautiful one. Still not done yet, though.

When I made my staff, I was lucky enough to live in the backwoods of Kentucky by a lake. I went down to the lake and then a found a rather large branch that I thought would be perfect for my would be staff. I thanked the land for allowing me to take this branch and make it into something new. I remember having a scarf that I wrapped around it and I draped it with all sorts of charms. Staffs a primarily used for directing energy for magical purposes such as healing, hexing, or spellwork.

It is also possible to make your staff out of other materials such as metal, stone, or even plastic. I'd imagine that the materials would be a bit more difficult to obtain though.
