Reputation is a ranking of your contributions (spells/articles/forum posts) and how you are viewed by other members of the website (namely members ranked Knowledgeable and Adept with ranking abilities). Ranks are: Fluffy / Beginner / Novice / Knowledgeable / Adept. If you have not been on the site for a significant time you may not yet have a rank.

To be honest, on my old account i had one: now i don't. Simply don't worry about it, and contribute.

Show your maturity on the site, ask questions, and help out in chatter and forums to the best of your ability.

It's better not to ask for one, and also abide by the rules. It takes time to earn one. Also is it really needed? Heck i would like my beginner Reputation again, but i must prove myself again. So is it needed? Will it change who you are?
No so don't worry.

Out of all (almost) 7 years on this site, I never knew SoM had a fluffy rank created. I think it's useful to have, to be honest.. :O
