Spells with kids in house

I have a 5 year old. I try to do my spells when she is not around, which is not often. Other than that I have her play in her room.
I put myself in a circle for more power and protection purposes.
If she is in her room and aware of what I am doing is she still safe? I don't want to put her in ANY danger whats so ever.
What should I do?
Anyone with kids have any advice?

What Nich said.

As an added precaution, I do all negative works outside of the house and if I am calling on any heavier entities, I go outside as well. Not because they're dangerous, but because I don't want them sensing energy they don't need to.

Aside from that, you can always do protection work on the home itself (as many people do), making the entire place sacred and protected.

I don't do anything negative at all. Just things to help my family.

There is a great book called Circle Round by Starhawk. It is about raising children in Goddess traditions. It tends to lean more on the Pagan side of things however it is a great resource. I myself do not have children but enjoyed the book anyways. There are lots of kids activities in the book from stories, songs, crafts, recipes, and so on. Great to teach them about the elements, the sabbats, the moon, etc. It is a good option if you want to incorporate your kids in your practice rather than hiding it from them.

I think that we have in our minds we have to be solitary and hide ourselves from our kids. You can show your kid your altar if they approach you when in circle. They can be invited to be in that space for sure. Once they get older you can later tell them not to touch the things on your altar and tell them that you need some time to pray or whatever. Setting them up with their own activity for the time being may be an idea as well. You could even have your kid have their own altar and they can decorate with various things. If you go for walks they can pick up any feathers or special stones for their altar.

As far as your child goes she will be safe from any bad energy or entities if you engage in protection, shielding, etc. As for safety otherwise, it is like any other time you are absorbed into something, you to an extent have to watch your child. At age 5 I think they can be okay for a bit in their rooms alone without burning the house down.

Best of luck!

This is a great topic as children are everywhere. Whether you have children living with you or not it should not be an issue for children to be in the vicinity of your circle or place of practice. I often cast magical workings with my children about me, I incorporate magical practice into my daily routines as I cleanse and bless with protection my home and it's inhabitants. Some of these rituals are done without great extravagance while others may be seen as a theatrical production by those who are not into or understand magical practice.

If you want alone time to cast by yourself it might be best to stick with the traditional witching hour, aka midnight, as many children are fast asleep by this time. It would be quieter for concentration purposes but any incorporation of chanting or drumming may disturb those trying to sleep.

I personally talked a lot to my children as they were growing up about my practice, they often had and still have their own alters with items they find special. My children also enjoyed and still enjoy the multiple alters set up throughout my home.

The energy that you draw and practice with is just energy, neither positive or negative, it is what you choose to do in the processes of casting or redirection of this energy that defines the intentions of the magical working.

If you are throwing curses out there you might want to have a lot of protection magical cast first and as always realize the scale of justice you place yourself upon in casting this type of magic. I personally feel this type of negative working could possibly become an issue for children especially if it's negatively is effecting the parents or a parent of the children.

Children can also be sensitive to visitors (spirits) that are drawn to your magical practice. This is why protection wards, spells, and charms are a good idea to have prior to other types of casting. This might be the biggest issue for some children as we keep seeing more and more sensitive children being born.
