The elevated heart rate, shallow breathing, and sweating are all natural stress responses to your extreme displeasure in the dream and difficulty waking yourself up.

When you are dreaming, sometimes it is immersive enough that your mind believes that it is real (or real enough) and it can be difficult to get out or change the circumstances within the dream. I have experienced this many times.

Sometimes I end up replaying the exact same scenario many times in my attempts to exit a nightmare.

As far as I can tell if you understand your in a nightmare your having lucid dreams. I don't know if it's the same for everyone in a lucid dream but in your nightmare if your subconscious can fully understand your only dreaming you could (with enough self control) change it or bend it to your will. that's what I've experienced in situations like that in the past. as for how to stop it I'm not quite positive, the first thing I would do would probably be drink a calming herbal tea, then meditate on it before you fall asleep. if that doesn't work pm me and I'll discuss in further detail other methods.

If you can, in stead of trying to wake up, stand within the dream. Look for a door to exit. If you seek a door, either there will be one or there will not. Likely, just seeking a door will cause your subconscious to create one.

Declarations of personal power and soverignty also can work within a dream, though the oppressive feeling may not stop immediately. But a bit of courage can help in a dark place -- even when the hippocampus is going nuts during REM sleep.
