I know some stuff about warlocks. There small about the size of a tall coffee table, they have pointy ears, are good with swords and like and are good at mining. Hope it helps.
A warlock is basically one who is outcasted as being an oath breaker to a coven or group of practitioners. It's really an insulting and degrading title to be a warlock. But modern day (new-age) tends to be more accepting of various name titles; particularly in the Pagan society. For example: where witches, once upon a time, were female practitioners of a specific type it is now common and accepted that males call their selves "witch." Meanings have changed over time.
In my view (And this is just me) its like a witch (Which is anyone who uses magic) just a title for a male
So you seeming like you're one isn't like those people to think they are vampires or something because its not something you are its something you become over time (And for this I'm using your as its someone skilled at magic example)
My interpretation was the same as above - A warlock meaning experienced practitioner that had been rejected/sent away by a coven or unit. :) Drilling in the fact of, 'You just don't happen to be a witch/wizard/warlock or whatever people say - it takes time, research and practice' :)
Vanity's Fire is correct. The term Warlock comes from an old Anglo-Saxon word meaning "oath breaker" and it is commonly used to designate someone who has violated their oaths to their coven and who has been outcast (or warlocked) because of it.
Hollywood latched on to the word and decided it meant any male Witch...particularly in the show Charmed. But this is incorrect. A Witch is a Witch whether they be male or female. Generally when you find someone claiming to be a Warlock they are of the role-playing sort.
There are also a few out there who have claimed the name Warlock for themselves largely for the shock value and the publicity it gets them because they cater to the Hollywood image in people's minds.
Most Witches would be highly insulted if you referred to them as a Warlock, and would look askance at someone calling themselves a Warlock.
So to my mind the only way you could be a Warlock is if you were either an oath-breaker, a role-player, or a publicity hound.
