Weird offerings to goddes

Okay, so my mom is a Buddhist. So she worships Qwan Yin the Chinese goddess of compassion. She places many weird offerings on the altar. I'm being serious here, she puts Doritos on the offering plate sometimes Chips Ahoy! Chocolate chip cookies, sometimes Cheese Dip Pretzels, or maybe even Cheez-its basically chips and stuff…… sometimes she puts fruits on the altar. Now THAT seems okay to me. So do you think that this is proper?? I have no idea if gods and goddesses like junk food........

Its really funny,ok....gods/goddess are not like we humans.,they don't need food to survive, actually your mum wants to show appreciation towards her goddess, but it is not neccesary to give offrings, just a THANK U is ok.

Just a thought, in mythology of various cultures, it was custom to make offerings of the tastiest foods that were available during the time. Hence fruits are sweet and delicious, and therefore they have been a favorite pastime. Junk food usually tends to taste really good, better than most nutritional and healthy foods, regardless of the dangerous effects unhealthy living and diet.

I do find it weird myself, though. Does it bother you she does this or is it something your just curious about.

I think your mother would know best what serves her relationship with diety. If she has been worshiping with Kwan Yin for many years then she has a long-standing relationship with her, and i'd trust her judgement as to how she relates to Her.

She is offering the goddess sweets. Offering honey cakes and fruit and a variety of similar confections has been a traditional practice for hundreds of years.

Did she eat any of them before hand, because sharing you food with the goddess, in my opinion, is a blessed offering, it shows the goddess that you would sacrifice your own food for her. :) i do it all the time with my water, i leave a bit at the bottom of the glass, and pour it into my only house plant, while saying which goddess/god it's for. I know it's not so traditional, but it's the best i can do. :)

Deities don't care about name brands or nutritional value. The intent of the offering and what it means to the person offering it is what matters.

Like the old saying goes.."It's the thought that counts".

Being acknowledge goes a long way with most deities or entities for that matter. Honey and sweets are more offered to the fae and other various entities as well. And it all really depends on the culture as well. Look at the day of the dead in Mexico, they lay food some times a four course meal for spirits. So it's not what you give them as long as it's as simple as acknowledgement ^_^
