Welcome to the site. You need to go to the newbie central area located on the home page. In order to cast successfully you need to become proficient at gathering and directing energy. This is commonly achieved through meditation. You can also search magic basics and other topics in our forums.

Are you interested in Witchcraft or are you interested in Wicca? They aren't one and the same thing, and resources I might suggest would be based on which you wanted to pursue.

Spell focus with energy means meditation, grounding, etc. It's necessary to clear the mind and concentrate on the spell otherwise It wouldn't work. If you had a test and you didn't study on it then you would fail the test. Magick is energy. You are new to this. Take some time and read our articles. Take some time and watch videos, and take some time reading the newbie central at the homepage I believe. Magick has no official dogma or law. You do not have to believe in this or that. Do more research. I know.... I know.. boring and hard work. Well, that's the only way of getting into the craft. Don't become lazy!!! LIVE MAGICK!

Into Wicca and witchcraft ? Sure, many people "do" both , You can be religious and practice magick. Or even an atheist.

As for the books , I'd suggest:

"Exploring witchraft" by Gerina Dunwich
"Encyclopedia of magic and ancient Wisdom" By Cass Eason,
even Lady Sabrina's " The Witchs master grimoire" that though bit "simplified" in places, makes a great reffrence for begginers.

The first two suggestions are very comperhensive and cover things from meditation and different path s and traditions, over folkore, and modern western traditions and systems, to downright practical advices.

Hope this helps You, many Blessings !

There's "idiots guide" and "for dummies" books on this stuff too. Those are usually great for beginners at anything. I have the idiots guide to spells and spellcraft, and even though it doesn't mention Wicca in the title, the writers are Wiccan so they work it in. It also has lists of correspondences for colors, herbs, stones, etc so it's a good reference book.

If your into both no problem. Wiccans are Witches but not all witches are into Wicca.
