questions about deitys

a little new to all this, so about deitys. I'd just like to know a little bit more about them. Do you pick your deity, or do they come to you, and do you absolutely HAVE to have one?
could you possibly give me an example of the deity/deitys you're committed to and how you found them or something?
thanks!

This is a relatively broad question. There are thousands of dieties out there spanning all kinds of beliefs. Some say the dieties come to them, others say they have grown to love their patron deity. There are many methods of finding ones dity(ies). No, you do not have to have one. You can be agnostic and practice witchcraft - as long as you acknowledge that there are higher forces (or a higher force) within the universe.

My patron diety for a while was Aphrodite, of the greco-roman pantheon. I was a Hellenic Wiccan and found myself adoring her for some reason. Everything she represented and was (is) to me was beautiful - in all aspects of the word. Of course, I did respect the pantheon(s) equally, but her, she was my patron goddess.

I hope that this information benefits you in some way.

As was said, there's a lot of different views on this. I believe everyone experiences this differently because this is a very individualized thing. Some deities may or may not come to you, some you may choose to seek out yourself. It's mixed, if anything.

I don't have a "patron", so to speak, but Loki is the main deity I work with. Next to him is Hel. In a way you could consider them the "lord and lady" of my practices. I've worked with unders under the Norse pantheons (Fenrir, Angrboda, Tyr, Freya, etc) and even at one point was looking into Egyptian deities.

Best of luck :)

mixed question, yes and at the same time a huge, resounding no.

the basic deity of Wicca is the Horned God and Triple Goddess, which basically these two are merely stages in the year, spring, summer, winter. you don't have to believe in any deities if you feel you don't. some people believe there's this giant ball of energy that we return to after death to tell of the lessons we learned in this lifetime.

certain spells work better when calling upon certain deities because that's their specialty. [example Aphrodite for love] the third option people have, most people do in fact, is choose two deities from other cultures to act act their God and Goddess. i do know of people who have no deity, believing that it's really nature one must worship, others focus on only one god or goddess [personally i don't see why, there's two for a reason, everyone has male and female in their lives, but whatever, your faith] finally, there are people who pray to creatures, elements, or mythical beings. myself while i do have a God and Goddess i pray to, i follow Dragon Magick, so i call upon dragons the same way someone would call upon their deities.

my point is, it's all personal faith, whatever feels right for you is the right answer. hope that helped.

Daemons (not deamons) is an entirely different topic for an entirely different thread.

Sometimes the deity will pick the person but more often than not the person will pick the deity. Deities will make their presence known through dreams or something similar. Usually though the person will read the myths and practices surrounding a deity and something will just click.

In my case it was a mix of the two.
