The Power of the Tongue

Proverbs 18:21
21 The tongue has the power of life and death,
and those who love it will eat its fruit.

Psalm 64:3
3 They sharpen their tongues like swords
and aim their words like deadly arrows.

This thread is mainly directed to Christian Wiccan’s, however, I am sure that others may also benefit from the things that I write here. The reason that I place these two Bible verses at the start of this thread is to show how great that its power can be. With simply speaking something with our tongue it gives us power, power that we cannot begin to imagine or comprehend! Too often we neglect and do not realize this great responsibility that comes with our tongue and our spoken word.

Also, In Psalm 64: 3 it seems to get across the most common thing that we use our tongues for, to sharpen them like swords and then aim them at other in hopes of their psychical, mental, or spiritual death. We must keep in mind though, our own tongue has the power of our life and death, and the sword that the tongue carries is indeed double edged. There is hope for all who read this if they take it to heart, if nothing else, ignore the fact that they are Bible verses that I am using to get across my point. If you have to, think of them as nothing more than wise adage’s that indeed do hold truth.

Proverbs 12:18
18 Reckless words pierce like a sword,
but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

Proverbs 10:19
19 When words are many, sin is not absent,
but he who holds his tongue is wise.

To me, these two verses also hold truth in dealing with our tongues. Reckless words, that are spoken by the tongue can indeed piece deeply into a person’s soul like a sword, but sometimes, those reckless words that you wish to speak when actually thought out into a wise can actually bring healing to those who have suffered and been wounded by the sword of reckless words.

Proverbs 10:19 seems to be in reference to those people who wish to use their tongue in many different words, are not perceptive, and thoughtless to the things that they are saying and the sin that seeps into them. However, a person using few words, listens, and puts thoughts into his few words has wisdom that is worth listening too. You see, knowledge and wisdom are two different entities. Knowledge is simply something that you know in your heart and your mind, which are inherently flawed. Wisdom, comes from the union of your heart, mind, and soul. You soul is the divine spark within us all that is not flawed because it is the only little piece of Heavenly perfection that we have within us.

Proverbs 15:4
4 The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life,
but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.

Once again, a tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, it adds to the constantly growing, fruiting, and beautiful nature of the tree that is our life. This tree of life thrives on this healing that the tongue can bring, but when someone deceitful uses this tongue to bring plague and sickness to this tree of life, it crushes the spirit, the soul of this tree, and this tree of life, is indeed our life.

Proverbs 25:15
15 Through patience a ruler can be persuaded,
and a gentle tongue can break a bone.

This is probably my favorite verse when it comes to the tongue in the Bible. This verse was actually pointed out to me while I was in rehab because I have a soft spoken gentle voice and the man who pointed it out to me said that he felt like God told him it was for me. Patience is simply more than just waiting around, patience is being able to wait around and hold your tongue. Patience is that ability to hold your tongue until the right moment comes, it is wisdom. It is from this patience that even the mightiest ruler can be persuaded and broken by even the gentlest tongue…
In conclusion, take this as you well. I know the majority of it is Bible verses, but I myself fall more into the Christian Wiccan category of things. But like I said, if nothing else, takes these verses as words of advice, knowledge, and even wisdom. Never under estimate the power of spoken word and of the tongue in any practice of magick. It simply holds too much power…
