Payment for tarot?

In some of my reading about tarot practices, there was a fair bit of mention about getting some kind of payment for a reader's services. Sometimes it was money, like when you go to a shop and do a consult, and other times it would be something as simple as candles or beads or fresh baked bread. Just out of curiosity, what are some of your thoughts on "payment" for tarot services? And if you take payment for your services, what kinds do you usually prefer?

Well, you are doing a service for someone else (entertainment or otherwise) so I would see it as only fair to recive payment. Also, by doing these readings you are putting in a lot of your personal time/effort which I feel deserves a fair payment for what you have done.

When it comes to what you are getting as payment... it depends on what you agree on. If you see something that you like on the client (such as a necklace) you might ask for that for payment instead of money. Since it is a very old practice it was very common for items to be traded rather than be given money. In the end it's all up to you. I do all my readings for free but I have considered getting paid for them when I'm older as money is something that can be used to pay bills... ;)

Many people say that you should'nt pay for readings since the diviner should give their gift for free. Then think about this..How does the diviner maintain themselves? They have a home, they need to eat. Payment for readings has gone back for decades, with my view being that it should have payment. They are giving you their services, therefore you need to give back to them. It does not matter whether it is money, candles, or such. You just have to give something of use back to them as payment for their services to you. I myself prefer getting paid with money.

It's absolutely perfect, the diviner must use his/her gift(s) and give up their time to work for you, think about them if you were them maintaining a household wouldn't you ask for payment, the fact that they ask for candles is actually quite polite to you, I don't divine yet, but if I did one I would surely ask for something in return but something small.

On here I do readings for free or for tips if offered. I used to charge for readings through eBay. Getting money for time and effort is nice, but my desire to.do readings usually overcomes my desire to get paid for it.

It's as old as the art of reading. It was normal to 'cross the palm with silver' which literally meant making a cross mark on the palm of the reader's hand with a silver coin and then placing the coin in the middle of the palm.

I certainly don't agree with the phone tarots that charge something like £1.50 a minute. Their job is to keep you on the phone as long as possible.

i don't charge, mostly because it's a hobby and i'm not sure how to set up paypals on SoM, but i'd say 5$ is fair.

when i started out i was taught that getting compensation would cloud the readings, so i didn't want to charge. as i've gone on, and i wind up with a slew of readings, there should be some kind of exchange because you're putting your time and energy into doing a reading [and as odd as it sound you can feel drained after a couple] so some type of compensation sounds fair. commonly money, but i've known people who will do readings at a shop opening or some fair in exchange they get a book, or free admission, or something.

Recently I've been doing readings free for practice, but then I think I should soon charge for my readings when I feel that I am ready.
