The Word 'Magick'

The Word magick itself comes from the Zoroastrian priests of ancient Persia; they were called Magi.

The Magi were famous for their powers of healing adn divination - especially astrology. They believed that the cosmos was alive and Divine.

The 'Three Wise Men' who brought gifts to Jesus were Persian Magi.

The Persian word magus (means 'priest' and 'fire worshipers') was adpopted into Greek as magos ('wise one', wizard or jugler')

I was under the understanding that The term "magick" was coined by famous witch Aleister Crowley, to distinguish it from stage magic. According to him, magick is "the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will."

It was originally called 'magic' but the 'k' was introduced by Crowley to distinguish authentic magick from stage magic. With some (including me) the 'k' conjures up images of purple which is commonly associated with the occult. There were tricks in the olden days but they still gave it the same name because they thought the tricks were so amazing they were almost magic (though they knew full well it wasn't) and they could still tell the difference without an extra letter added on.

Two people agree with you, LilacCura. I researched the origins of the word MagicK myself.

Valerie; that may be the source of the word Magic, ending with a 'C', but Magick, ending with a 'K', is from Aleister Crowley
