I'd recommend the book A Field Guide to the little people by Nancy Arrowsmith.

I don't know whether it is right or not, but I always heard that the fae were a collection of magical species that are grouped into a category because of similar abilities and looks.

They are not the traditional "fairy" type beings you would expect, they incorporate creatures like pixies, leprechauns, Brownlies, slyphs, etc.

I was always told that they could pass between the planes, so they are never truly in either plane of existence and can rarely be seen bar in very special areas and in very special circumstances.

I hope this helps any even if it isn't completely correct.
