Basil seeds

I recently got a package of Basil seeds from a friend and they come with no instructions on how to plant them or take care of them. I was wondering what would be the best place to plant them as I live in muddy land, and what is the best way to take care of them. (Sorry, I know nothing about basil)

You should find an area with full sun exposure, about 6-8 hours daily. The seeds should be planted around 1/4 inch deep in well drained soil, during the dry periods in the summer they should be watered freely. Basil like moist soil, so use mulch to around the plant to keep the soil moist. As they begin to grow and are able to be harvested, frequent harvest prolongs the life of the Basil. Hope this helped!

Another pointer: Basil does not like wind! I've lost quite a few plants this way. And depending where you live, give them shade in the heat of summer days. Mine have liked morning sun up until the heat. Then they prefer shade, not real dark, but enough to protect against burn. I live in the desert, so that part is important. And yes, well drained soil, as they can actually drown if the roots stay too wet. Good luck!

Basil is a great indoor or outdoor plant. I suggest planting your seeds in a pot. This way you can take it inside with you during inclement weather. Place the pot in direct sun for the majority of the day and keep the soil moist. Be careful not to leave the young sprouts in direct midday sun once they pop through. It may be too hot in your area during the summer months for the young plants to withstand. Be sure to also pinch back the buds once they begin to appear so that the plant continues to generate leaves not seeds. If you want seeds then let a few buds bloom and then seed.
