Do you mean "bind runes"?

Bind runes are not a form of "binding" such as we think of when we are talking about binding a person or binding a thing. They are an ancient form of talisman making employed in Scandinavian countries and also throughout the Germanic and Anglo-Saxon cultures. A bind rune consists of constructing a single character out of several different runes, thereby concentrating the power of the individual runes into a single, and greater combined power.

An example of this was the bind rune that I constructed for my husband to carry when he was in Iraq. It combined eight different runes for protection, safe journey, health, etc. to keep him protected while he was in the war zone. I used a wood-burning tool to inscribe the runes on a wooden disc that he carried in his pocket at all times.

Bind runes can be put together in two different ways. The runes can be laid one atop the other. Some examples of this way of constructing a bind rune can be seen at http://www.modernheathen.com/?p=85

Another way of constructing a bind rune is to create a spoked wheel with each rune at the end of a connected spoke. You can see a picture of one done in this fashion if you scroll part-way down the page at http://www.modernheathen.com/?p=79

A bind rune can be worn as jewelry if you want it to do something such as protect you in difficult situations. Or it could be carried in a pocket if you were doing one to help you get a job or take a test. Or you could keep it on your altar if you were trying to draw wealth into your home. Let your imagination run here as there are many, many ways to use your bind rune.

Here's some good sites that discuss bind runes, how to construct them, and how to use them:
