Pentagram and Pentacle!

What are the difference of the "Pentagram" and the "Pentacle"?

Well the has been lots of confusion between these two almost similar magic(k)al symbols. Except for one thing. A Pentagram is a star with a circle around it. This I believe represents the circle of witchcraft. The star itself represents the 5 major elements; Spirit, Air, Water, Earth, and Fire (probably not in that order). I will show you a couple of picture of the difference between the two and the similarities as well. As for the Pentacle is a star by itself. Representing the individual star, representing the 5 elements.

What properties do they have in magic(k)?

The Pentagram is the most used symbol in the magic(k)al world. The Pentacle is the second most used symbol as well. These two have been used for "warding off" and "Capturing". There are many misinterpretations about the two symbols of magic(k), some people state the pentagram and pentacle are both the same, and represent the hail of Satan, which is not true, not everyone that caries a pentacle or pentagram hails the devil, or any other entity.

There is a sign of the Satanists, which is a upside down pentagram or pentacle. Remember not all Satanists are evil, there are some really friendly Satanists there are different kinds of Satanists.

Very good post.

May I add, that to the Satanists, the upside-down pentagram does not represent the 5 major elements, but the rejection of the Christian Holy Trinity, symbolised by the 3 downwards-pointing points of the star.

Just a few major things...

  • The Pentacle is the one surrounded by a star.
  • The Pentagram is the star without the circle.
  • The circle around the Pentacle represents unity, eternity, and how everything is interconnected, especially the elements.
  • The Pentacle was more widely used in earlier times, and the Pentagram has become more common in modern times.
  • The upside down Pentagram is also a symbol of a someone who is a second degree coven member.

This is an excellent diagram of the differences:

Yeah, I was going to correct you on that pentacle being the one with the circle. Good that you added the right info.

Actually the Satanists don't use the pentagram.

They use an upside down star with the downward point longer or(elongated) than the rest of the points.

Melton13,

If you do a quick google search for the "Sigil of Baphomet", you will see that the lower point of the star is not elongated, but the same length as the other points.

Baphamet is not a demon
He is the pagan horned god pan and a Symbol of balence
The chuch of satan likes to steal thing from people
As from the Jews Lilith
As from the Catholics the cross of Peter
And as from the pagans pan and baphamet

If the Satanists "steal" such things, you could also argue that the pagans "stole" the Greek Gods from the Ancient Greeks, the Roman Gods from the Romans, and the Egyptian Gods from the Ancient Egyptians.
