What is Love?

This is a question that most, of not all of us, have asked ourselves at one point in our lives. What is Love? How does it feel like? Does it exist? Is it of any use? They torture us like burning needles piercing through our skin and we never seem to be able to find an answer to them. Some say that Love is the result of hormones in the body working through the blood and brain. Others would go as far as to say that our souls are bound with someone on the planet - a Soulmate. That for every person there is another to complete him. I simply wondered how much of this is true. Of one thing I am certain though - Love can make a monster of the most honourable man and a saint of the most vile criminal. It can give us power which we cannot imagine! Provide us with an endless source of energy which we can use in our practices. I wondered how this happenes. What is Love?

I cannot speak for anyone else, however, to me unconditionally loving someone is an overpowering desire to protect them and do anything to make them happy. When you cannot be anywhere near the person you love, ie. you cannot even tell the person what you feel (perhaps your love is forbidden) then it is agony. Your mind body and spirit all strain for affection and contact with the person. It is worse than despair, it runs much deeper and burns so much brighter. And it hurts.

Well, to know what true love is you must first learn to love yourself or feel the love from mother earth or your god or goddess. Many people get love and lust confused.

In my opinion I believe that love is a embracing feeling that makes me feel whole again, it doesn't hurt or make me sad. It is pure and healing.

Love is as much a weapon as it is a blessing. It can turn a man of stone to dust. Melt the meanest person to a pudle. And even syart wars.
To me love is being happy when your with them. Being able to look into a persons eyes and without a word knowing how they feel. It is being content and happy with silence. Wanting to protect them with all you can. And no matter what always forgiving them and showing how much you care.
For example. I think I love a girl. No matter how much or how badly she has hurt me. No matter how many times she has broken my heart I care so deeply about her. Like the other day a guy pushed her down and brused her hip. I almost broke his nose for it but was able to hold back. I would protect her with my life even of she wouldn't do the same for me.
So I ask you now. Do you truly love someone.

I think this thread is mistaking sexual attraction for love. The two do not necessarily go together! Many a sexually attracted partnership starts off in marriage and ends in divorce.
If two people are sexually attracted to each other, and they come from similar backgrounds, have similar interests, then, after marriage, when the intensity of the sex has diminished (and it does!) then real love grows.
Love depends on the compatibility of a man and woman (or two of the same sex), not merely on sexual attraction. That bit just doesn't last very long!

I was interested to read and a little bit embarrased, really. I wrote it at a time when I was confused. I still am, to an extent. I agree with the person who said that many of us mix up love and physical attraction. I think that what I managed to learn is that love is something which you cannot really explain. A feeling, an emotion which none of us have the words to explain, as any would be too light to describe it. I for one, am in love, even though I have many moments in which I stop myself and ask my mind "What are you thinking?". And I do this for exactly the same reason - I fear of mixing attraction and love together when it might be only hollow lust. Still... if we have felt both love and lust, doesn't it become apparent which one we get afterwards?

Indeed. Iv experienced both. And one can only truly know the difference when they have felt both.
