You could always meditate and speak to your spiritual guide or higher self.

I have a fair number of spirit friends. Usually they just come by. Rori came into my room one night when I was 13 and I invited him to stay. I'm almost certain he moved on two years ago because I haven't sensed/heard him in that long but with the veil so thin I've noticed a few things that Rori usually did.

Meditation and increasing your clairvoyant abilities can help you sense them better, but you should also make the energy in your house inviting.

Sadly you won't have a friend only you can see/hear [you might want to talk to a doctor in that case] because I have other friends who can sense/see/hear spirits, so when Rori or any other spirit was in the room we all noticed. Funny story, one time we were communicating with Rori and I asked him a question that confused him so much the three of us all heard him shout 'what?' In this really confused voice so we all started laughing but the two people who can't sense spirits just looked at us asking why we were all laughing. [Guess you had to be there] point is, keep an open mind, sometimes a door closing is due to a draft, and voices no one else can hear could be a medical problem. Be sure to rule out logical answers first.
