I would like to know are there any tools on the altar that can easily be substituted with something else that is as powerful.

Watermist you don't actually need any tools or even an alter. Tools are useful because they help us to focus our energies. You can for example use your finger in place of a wand or Athame. A cauldron can be anything (but please make sure it's flameproof). A chalice can be a wine glass. Whatever tools you use it's best to consecrate them.
In place of/ or in addition to an alter you can use markers for the four cardinal points earth (north), air(east), fire(south) and water (west). A bowl of salt can represent earth, incense for Air, and a red candle for Fire.

Of course. There are as many varations of tools as there are varitions of paths and the layout of alters themselves. For example for the element of Earth you can use a rock that you have found that you are attracted too. You can also use Sea Salt or if you really want to Table Salt. I have seen alters that used a feather to represent air or you can use a candle. So as you can see there are many different ways to set up your alter. Remember that the tool is just a connection for you and your energy to that which you are useing. It is only a means to an end if you will.
