I know the story behind the Simon Necromonicon is fake, but I've heard that the spells actually work. Is this true?

I keep hearing that, too. I would assume that this means the rituals themselves are well-made and that the "gods" invoked are either useful psychological archetypes or egregores (and I'd assume something as popular as the Necronomicon would have pretty hearty egregores).

From what I have read of it, the working of the various gates and rituals within the practice is not unlike other practices I have seen intended to awake one's spiritual awareness.

The concepts, while masked within the fiction of H.P. Lovecraft's stories, also touch upon Babylonian lore and magical practice not unlike other, more traditional, ritual practices.

So long as you keep in mind that the surface of the text is fictional, it could be an alright resource.

The Necronomicon (Simon) is very powerful if taken very seriously. But the powers are not what you would expect and are very ancient and do things very powerful and spiratic.

Most people would be better served by a djinn or departed human spirit through a witchboard. Mabey even a succumbus of the common type not via Lillith; certainly not Xastir

As for walking the gates this is a concept you can use in a more hinduistic fasion with chakras to contact more peaceful spirit guides such as angels, or the higher energies of living persons or departed persons. The necronomicon is not written orderly and the central theme of the script is gate walking that the Mad Arab goes into a couple differant discussions about basiclly related to the celestrial objects and thier Personificated powers. With detailed tailisman symbology. The introduction doesn't cover this before it spurts out conjurations by devote followers. The gate walking is a common concept in hinduism chakras and shammanism ; voodoo and the like. If you don't see the Necronomicon in the light of Astrology you really have done yourself a disservice and will not get far in funcioning regularly with it's evocations. Several of the higher degree Elder entities are evil incarnate very similar to discriptions of Satan in the Bible and conjuring them will cause horrific happenings to you and others ; while others like Mardok are eons closer to our current time space and with the 50 names can be accessed by the first gate in proper sequence which one will see if they decipher with astrology the proper order of the gates which the Mad Arab has intentionally produced in written form choaticly to show the manner of these Elder Principalities (he calls Gods). Which is probley the correct order to actually go to the later Gates like the 6th and 7th ; the strangeness would be seen by them as entertaining and respectful of thier intelligence.
