Pagan pretty much refers to anything that is not Christian, Muslim, or Jewish. So pagan is a umbrella term, where as Wicca is one religion in the umbrella. Wicca is pagan, but pagan does not have to mean Wicca.

Esprit, there are many more religions out there are do not fall under the pagan banner. Paganism is reserved for polytheistic religions (religions in which there is more than one diety). Wicca is a polytheistic religion, thus pagan in origins, but paganism is not wiccan, as it has already been stated above.

The term Pagan originates from the latin word Paganus. It meant 'country dweller' and was a derogatory term used by early christians. It basically meant 'Hick'.

In neo-paganisms, we hope the word has taken on a more positive meaning. It refers to nature religions, old and new, (wicca is a very young religion). A strong theme of nature religions, is a belief in animism, that is, that every living thing has a spirit or a soul. Paganism reveres the divine in all things.

There are monotheist nature religions, like Dianic Wicca. Some focus on a single Life Force of no specific gender. It is more the reverence for the natural world that we enjoy, rather than the number of deities acknowledged, that defines pagan religions from others.

As Zebrah posts says, there are some pagan paths that are monotheistic. My definition is more from a Christian's perspective. It is probably also the definition of 'heathen'. (dweller of the heath). Which was probably another term to describe 'hicks' and 'nonAbrahamic'.
