WaterCat, I believe I understand your question. Let me see if I can clarify for you:
There are two terms often applied to the same thing: Book of Shadows and Grimoire. While they can be the same thing, I prefer to keep them separate. The difference being that a BoS is a journal, a record of your magickal workings. A Grimoire is a spellbook, and where you write your rituals, and favorite spells, and whatnot. While they can be the same, though, this tends to get a little complicated, so I choose to keep them separate. I hope this helps.

A Book of Shadows is like a cookbook for wiccans and witches etc. Full of spells, rituals, potions, experiences, coven, and loads of different things, whether a Grimoir is a book where only black magic is recorded, i know magic has no colour but thats the easiest way to describe magic thats not so goody-two-shoes :) x

Personaly I tend to see the BoS as a witch/wiccan thing, and the Grimoire more of a wizard/druid/magician book. All filled with info related to their choosing. For a witch it might be more of spells and such, for a wizard more of rituals or info in general, and perhaps for a druid something like different seasonal things as well.

I agree with Glimwick's POV, a BOS is usually a witch type of book whereas the grim. is more of a wizard/druid type of book , not a stronghold for dark spells.
