Rune lands on side

Hey there y'all,

I'm quite new to runic divination, but I was wondering if anyone has any insight as to whether there's a specific meaning to when a rune lands on its edge.

Obviously it's hard to give insight into that reading without seeing the casting as a whole, but I just wanted to know for future reference.

I don't recall the specifics, but I believe the rune was kenaz, though I disregarded the whole casting as I had no idea what to make of it.

Runes are read with a few different factors to take into place. Face up; face down; distance from other runes (especially in a casting instead of a lot placement); and the aspect each rune to the rest of them. For this reason, and more, it can take days and/or multiple sittings to read a casting especially when more complex castings are done.

A few notes to further detail. It does not matter what direction they face. A rune facing up is known as a bright-stave. You could say these are the normal meanings. A rune faced down is a murk-stave. These are read in the "negative" meaning. Sometimes you may have a bright that comes out being murk when read because of it's aspect to another rune. And a murk could be bright (though often as how it can become. Think it's dark right now but the sun will come out tomorrow.) Other times with either factor, a rune, bright or murky, could be blocked. This blockage caused by some factor may be represented by another rune.

A lot of divination is by how you interpret the casting or placement. Personally, I have no idea how you should interpret the rune laid on it's side. I can't explain that one to you as how I feel it is may not be fitting for how you feel it to be. For example. I could completely ignore it and you may feel it to be a blockage. I don't want to tell you to ignore something that may be very important.

When reading the runes, there is no up or down, only what’s known and what’s not known. Look at clusters, but before doing any of this you must learn the runes. It is recommended to work with each rune starting with Fe’hu for nine days to gain the insights and have a basic understanding of each. Call on Odin or Freyja to guide you in this working.
