Meditation Guidelines

This article should function as a guideline for those looking to begin meditation, there is no guided meditation within however the information should be easily applicable to future meditations and can provide a solid base for understanding the benefits and nature of meditation. This article will address what meditation is, why should you meditate, and how long to meditate for.

When you search for a definition of meditation you tend to find something either entirely spiritual or physical depending on the view of the author, Ill try to find a middle ground in my description as I feel it can be applied towards both pursuits. In my opinion, from years of practice and research, meditation is the practice of self-relaxation, contemplation and personal reflection through the act of calmness. There are varied methods of meditation and really no one singular right way to do it. As long as you create a feeling of calm, either through inner reflection and stillness or through active motion in some cases, it can most likely be considered a form of meditation.

A daily routine of meditation improves a persons health and emotional state through relaxation and better understanding of themselves. Being relaxed heightens our energy, effort, and focus, giving us more opportunity to achieve our personal goals. The calm that meditation promotes can also help ease the suffering of chronic conditions like anxiety. Through mediation it is possible to help improve a persons emotional state, by achieving a realization of emotional needs. Spiritual awakenings have also been attributed to meditation which in turn can have a positive and significant lasting effect on a persons life through a heightened self-awareness.

The length of time dedicated to meditation varies from person to person. A general guideline should be about twenty minutes a day, give or take a few. People who are new to the process probably should consider doing less and those who practice more frequently should find a timeframe that suits them best. This is really personal preference, and there is no rule set in stone about the length of time a meditation should last. Just do what you are comfortable with.

I hope this article provided some basic guidelines for meditation which be discussed further in the upcoming articles of the series, which can be found on my profile.
