Hela

Recently, Hela and I have been working together on pendulum divination. She seemed pretty straightforward with the answers. What is Hela's usual personality? What food/service offerings does she like?

Hela is the Norse goddess of death. Which would come off as pretty dark to most people at first, but she's pretty ok. I've herd that she spends time alone alot, so it makes her kinda... snappy, maybe? Short-tempered, kind of? I don't know. But, being the goddess of death, she obviously could kill thousands of people without even lifting a finger, so try not to disappoint her. She'd probably be really reliable for healing, though. Some plants are sacred to her, such as elder, yew, holly. She finds decomposition and death just as sacred as birth or procreation, so offering her even just a moldy piece of bread or a dead mouse would be just fine, as long as you be respectful to her. And I would just recommend asking her about her personality or what she does or likes. Nothing wrong with that. Ask and you shall recieve. Hope this helps!

I wouldn't describe Hel as being snappy or short tempered. I would describe her as being introverted, withdrawn, sometimes cold but understanding, alien- in that she's not accustomed to most social norms, etc. To get to know her personality, it's best you work with her and figure it out for yourself. Like any spirit or deity, she may act differently around different people.
Hel is the kind of goddess who obviously enjoys decay and the like. As suggested, an offering of moldy bread or a dead animal is appropriate. Sometimes I set food out on her altar until it rots, then remove it. Blood is another offering she enjoys.

But doesn't giving blood to a deity give them some kind of control over you? That's what I've heard...

Not at all!

Blood offerings are just personal offerings, at least in a lot of Northern Tradition related work. It's a way of showing a deity that you're willing to put your all into something, willing to give them your blood- something sacred to you, something only you can give.

The deity doesn't gain any kind of control over you through the process.
