The description that I have heard about Maegen isn't so much that it is a sort of power one may have, but rather that "Maegen" is described as a type of honor that you can earn and lose for sticking to your commitments and your word. Norse traditions hold that personal honor is central to who you are. And of course if you're going to do any sort of magic your word must be above reproach.

It's somewhat similar to the concept of orlog. It's the concept that says there is a personal power you gain from honorable acts. It's like a force within your soul, that impacts your wyrd and workings. If you behave in an honorable way, you increase this personal power. Telling the truth, doing what you said you would, following your own morals and otherwise behaving honorably allow you to tap into Maegen. Behaving dishonorably, harming others without cause or breaking your word takes Maegen from you. And casts ill on your orlog and wyrd.
