tarot deck and book

i may come off sounding like an idiot, but i've never used tarot. i've glanced through a book or two, and i was given a deck as a gift, but i've never felt confident using it. i have found this beautiful dragon deck, but i don't think it comes with a book, so i was wondering if i could buy a dragon deck, but use any book since with tarot the cards are all basically the same with different art?

Well the books usually give you an in depth explanation of what the artist/designer felt each card symbolized. They also give some different spreads, and an explanation of how they feel you should do a reading. If you look it up at amazon.com you should be able to find the book for it. You do not have to use the book, but it can help a beginner learn tarot and their meanings. You should spend time every day with your deck to get to know the feel of it. The meanings for you will eventually vary from that of the book. I suggest pulling one out randomly and writing down what it makes you think of when you hold it or look at it. This is a good exercise that helps you to familiarize yourself with your deck. Blessings :)

it depends on the deck the bpook came with actually. the more traditional the deck, the easier it will be to apply it to another deck

it's a dragon deck, there's the dragon spread, which i know isn't a traditional spread, so i'm doubting the cards, say the jester, will hold the same meaning either. i talked to my friends at my occult shop, they have the book and deck, so i'll just wait till after yule [or ask my family] to get it.

cards with dofferent names will hold the samed meanings for the corresponding card in a regular deck. Would i be correct in guessing that the jester replaces the fool?

I would agree with Adrasteia. Try and familiarise yourself with your cards. The advice given, to write down your feelings, is an excellent way to start. I would also take a look at many of the resources out there

tarot communities also help, there are plenty out there and you need never feel like an idiot!! Also speak to the people at the shop as they are usually very helpful and understanding.

I learnt the tarot from a lady who taught me the meaning of each card over several weeks . But i had to give what i saw in the card myself .i have many packs i rread all similar but different .
the meaning of the card can read different to what the book say s but then it can read what it means , go by what you see and feel about the card . What you first pick up on it may be a tiny flower in the picture every thing has a meaning . use you instincts and you cant go wrong x
