How big does a Circle

usually have to be? Does it always has to be big, or can it be a small one just big enough to fit the caster?

nine feet is standard. but as long as it covers you and your work area you should be fine.

so for lbrp you do not have to necessarily step forward if your space is limited either

You need not take accurate measurements to cast a circle.You may work with a small one too :)
A circle should be casted in such a way that it gives ample space to the caster and for the tools to be accomodated inside it.But do not such a very small one,or you may end up stepping outside it. lol
