Sometimes, a pendulum is used for Dowsing. It does work, but is not as good as Dowsing Rods.

You can use pendulums with a board. It looks similar to a ouija board in that the letters of the alphabet are drawn in a curve. (If you google it, you should be able to find a image). Sometimes, there is also yes, no and DWA (don't want to answer) added in as well. The pendulum will swing to the different letters and spell words. The drawback is that it's often less accurate and depending on how the board is drawn, it can be a bit difficult to read.

In addition to dowsing which in my opinion works just as well as a rod, you can use pendulums for a wide variety of purposes. You can use a pendulum in a similar manner as a wand or staff and use it to channel and direct energy. You can use them for healing work, as a talisman for protection or whatever else you can imagine and so on.

You can also use pendulums to create artwork by a unique method I was taught by an old mentor of mine in which you hold your pendulum over a piece of paper and move it around. Whenever you feel the pendulum shift its weight you mark it on the paper. If you do this a few times you can start to see shapes taking form and eventually you will end up with a picture, a symbol, or something that may either be creative or revealing.

I recently learned of another use of pendulums. They can be used to check the direction of flow of your chakras, and the strength. Have someone hold the pendulum a few inches above each chakra point, starting from the root up. With a clear mind and steady hand, see which direction it spins, how fast, and how large the arch. If swinging counterclockwise or weakly have them visualize the chakra spinning faster in a clockwise direction and growing brighter. I tried this several times with the help of my neighbor. Was kinda silly as she is not as into this stuff as I am and kept laughing. After a few times it worked and I could actually feel the difference.

The problem with using a pendulum for dowsing is that of interpretation. It is difficult at times,to know whether or not the pendulum is being inadvertently being manipulated by the dowser.Whereas with rods, it is unmistakable. Passing over water, for instance, the rods practically jump out of the hands!
